Best Dog Parks in Austin

Greater Austin is bursting at the seams with great parks for your furry, four-legged friend. Some allow dogs to go off-leash while others require leashes. Here are some of our favorite dog parks in the Austin area.

1. Emma Long Metropolitan Park

Boasting more than 1,200 acres of protected parkland and just a few minutes from downtown Austin, Emma Long Metro Park is a popular choice for dog owners. That’s because it includes a vast off-leash dog area. Sprawling over more than 193 acres, it is located in the westernmost section of the park, which also includes hiking trails and amazing views of the city.

2. Red Bud Isle

Located on the shores of Lady Bird Lake near Tom Miller Dam, Red Bud Isle is a pleasant and laid-back place to bring your pooch. Stretching over around 13 acres of parkland that includes nearly a half-mile of trails and fishing, hiking and biking opportunities, the park allows dogs to roam leash-free.

3. Shoal Creek Greenbelt

If you live in Austin proper and need a dog park in the heart of the city, it’s tough to beat Shoal Creek Greenbelt. Stretching over 76 acres from Lady Bird Lake to 38th Street, the park is crisscrossed with limestone and gravel hiking trails and is close to many eateries. The no-leash area stretches for more than a mile from 24th Street to 29th Street.

4. Yard Bar

For times when you want to throw back a few while taking your pup out too, you can’t go wrong with Yard Bar. This popular hangout spot serves up snacks, beer and other drinks, but it also includes a fenced-in yard with toys, water bowls and agility equipment for dogs. “Bark Rangers” keep an eye on the pups while guests enjoy themselves. You can snag a day pass for just $5.50, and monthly passes are available too.

5. Work and Woof

Catch up on work while treating your dog to a few hours at the park at Work and Woof, a coworking facility that includes a large backyard area where dogs can frolic. The more than 10,000-square-foot facility is visited by a rotating selection of food trucks too, so you can even enjoy a bite to eat while taking care of business and entertaining your dog.

6. Zilker Dog Park

One of the best-known and most popular dog parks in Austin, Zilker Dog Park is located on the shores of Lady Bird Lake at 2100 Barton Springs Road. It includes hiking trails, picnic tables and stunning views of the city, but the off-leash dog area is not fenced in. Dogs love frolicking along the park’s rolling hills and shady trees.

As you can see, you are spoiled for choices when it comes to dog parks in the city of Austin. Whether you are buying a new home or just looking for new places to bring your pooch, the two of you are sure to have a blast at the locations listed above—and they are just the tip of the iceberg!
